Specifically, the major reason why a union starts falling apart is that a person stops communicating, either speaking or listening.  Hence, a commitment needs to be made to learn the other individual’s communication style, to look for help, and then to move forward building on these basic steps.

Huh?

Communication is the first basic building block of any marriage.  Interpersonal communication is so much more than superficial words of greeting or small talk.  Sharing with another individual how you are feeling is how communication is defined, but allowing the other person to see your heart and soul while letting down defenses and walls.  Active listening is the other important part of communicating.  The process of listening and then repeating back to the speaker what is heard, or what one believes is being said, is active listening.  Trust between two individuals is what allows this type of communication.  Trust between the two individuals means it is safe to share whatever is on one’s mind and heart without any fear of being judged or ridiculed, and what is needed to be maintained as the critical first step in how to restore a relationship.  Counseling may well be required if the couple is struggling with the communication aspect of fixing the relationship.  If a couple is not quite ready to meet face-to-face with a counselor, or can’t afford a counselor’s services at this time, an excellent resource to provide assistance can be found here: Using Marriage Tools: How To Fix A Marriage

The next step in how to repair a relationship is to look for counseling.  Counseling involves another impartial individual who will listen to both sides of the story and offer feedback in a non-judgmental way.  In addition, most qualified counselors have significant education and experience, often specializing in marriages.  This training and experience will allow a counselor to provide the couple additional tools and powerful insights on how to rebuild a marriage.

Moving Forward

One additional step that must be taken when resolving the problem of how to rebuild a relationship is to move on.  Meaning, that although their has been disappointment, betrayal, or frustration in the past, both parties need to forgive and start with a clean slate.  Depending on what has happened in the past, this can be extremely difficult, because memories are not easily replaced.  However, if the marriage continues to exist in the past it is quite possible that they will not have a future.
